Patient and health staff confrontations will increase with the lack of health staff, especially nurses to serve patients in hospitals and clinics in Papua New Guinea.
That is the concern now following a couple of incidences already at a hospital in one of the highlands provinces.
According to Lisa Iki, the Director of Nursing at the Kundiawa Hospital, a doctor from that particular hospital was attacked by angry relatives of patients due to slow services.
She fears this could happen to them if nothing is done by the government to have more nurses trained to work. This issue she says is faced in many parts of the country.

WE WILL HAVE TO REVIEW OUR LAW: PM

PNG Prime Minister Peter O’NEILL has expressed his condolences towards the families of the 8 individuals who were executed this morning in Indonesia.
He admitted that such news stories do stir much emotional debate amongst our citizens, but had leaned towards a country that was simply carrying out its laws in protecting its country and the people.
“ As you know Indonesia has stringent laws against drug dealing and as a result of that, the two Australians were executed this morning, but we do understand the emotional pain that their families have been put through at this time and offer our condolences , “ he said
“We also need to respect the fact that Indonesia has a massive drug problem and they are looking at ways of mitigating these issues, and while taking this path, death penalty is one of the measures that it has taken to protect itself,” he added.
He also said that PNG has also adopted provisions to carry out the death penalty and the Government has appreciated the concerns of churches and NGO’s who have been involved in such debate and he believes it is timely that we review our laws.
“ At this day and age, we have other measures that can be accorded as punishment for various offences and not necessarily taking one’s life,” he added.

The Digicel Cup match between the Kundiawa TNA Lions and the Mt Hagen Eagles went down to the wire as both teams were tied 26 all when in the dying minute Lions scored a try in the 79th minute of the match.
As the full time siren sounded a huge fight broke out amongst the players in the field which was started by Hagen Eagles players.
It was not known what was the cause of the fight but some Lions players were seen on the field with bloody face. In the commotion, a Lions player tried to grab a gun off a police officer and fired at the Eagles players but luckily the policeman shrugged him off and the situation was under control by the police.
The supporters were well behaved and did not join in the fight as they watched with confused feelings.
Many rugby fans expressed disgust from the manner the Hagen Eagles showed saying it was not how sportsman should behave and they say this clearly shows that our players have not developed in the game of rugby league. PNGFM

The Prime Minister, Hon. Peter O'Neill CMG MP, has thanked members of the public for welcoming delegates from around the Asia-Pacific who attended the series of APEC meetings that took place in Port Moresby over the past week. The Prime Minister further highlighted the relevance of APEC's work at the local level in Papua New Guinea.

As Papua New Guinea prepares to host the broader APEC process in 2018, PM O'Neill said the lead-in meetings provide the opportunity for the public to gain greater insight to APEC and for officials to refine logistics processes.

"The early APEC meetings give the public an opportunity for many people to get a better understanding of unique processes involved in hosting APEC meetings," the Prime Minister said at the conclusion of this week's meetings.

"There was also a great deal of interaction between delegates with business owners and the public, particularly relating to the meetings on women and the economy.

"Business relationships have been formed this week that will continue and stimulate further economic interaction.

"Through these meetings we also have the chance to refine logistical processes and enhance the capacity of officials who will interact with thousands of delegates before the end of 2018.

"Support to APEC meetings will continue to evolve and extensive training undertaken as we build the significant logistical and security operation that will be in place for 2018."

The Prime Minister said the benefits to the nation of hosting APEC are gained at a local level and this was demonstrated during the meetings in Port Moresby this week.

"While most media the attention is focused on the high level APEC events such as the Leaders' Summit, APEC is very much a working level process that gives our country access to knowledge, skills and technical expertise from around the Asia-Pacific.

"In a broad range of areas that includes agriculture, tourism, telecommunications and forestry, engaging through APEC gives Papua New Guinea direct access to information on practices that have worked in other countries.

"We can then apply that adapt and apply that knowledge in our economy.

"Papua New Guinea has been stepping up policy and technical engagement in APEC over the past few years and is now playing a more active role in the APEC process than ever before."

The two meetings that were held in Port Moresby over the past week were the Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy followed by the APEC High Level Policy Dialogue on Human Capacity Building.

The next round of APEC meetings will take place in the Philippines when senior officials meet ahead of the meeting of Trade Ministers on 23-24 May.

TWO more Parliamen-tarians will front up at the Waigani National Court to face misconduct in office charges.

Bogia MP John Hickey and Kagua Erave MP James Lagea were referred to the Public Prosecutor by the Ombudsman Commission on misconduct in office allegations early this year.

Last Friday, Public Prose-cutor Pondros Kaluwin requested the Chief Justice to appoint two separate leadership tribunals to inquire in to the allegations against the two leaders.

According to the Public Prosecutor, both MPs were referred to his office by the Ombudsman Commission on allegations that they failed to lodge financial returns to the Office of Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission after winning the 2012 General Election.

Mr Kaluwin, in two separate statements, said the two MPs had allegedly breached Section 89 of the Organic Law on the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates 2003 (OLIPAC) when they did not lodge their returns to the Office of the Political Parties and Candidates Commission

Mr Kaluwin said he has perused the two files and found that there is sufficient, cogent and credible evidence to refer the matters to an appropriate Leadership Tribunal.

The Chief Justice will now proceed to appoint tribunals to inquire into allegations against the two MPs.

PAPUA New Guinea can grow rice for commercial use says the Pilipino Seed Technology and senior consultant of Sun-Light (SL) Agritech Corporation Dr Frisco M Malabanan PhD of the Gabadi Hybrid rice project.

Dr Frisco said this after the second harvest of the farm on Tuesday for SL 12 rice, which was purely and naturally treated without use of chemicals.

He said the quality of the product comes to the credit of the country that PNG has the ideal temperature, weather and soil for growing the commodity.

Moreover, Koren Maso, from Village Garden Limited, said three types of rice were being trialled; SL8, SL12 and SL18.

The second harvest which was the SL 12 is one of the best in the production.

Mr Maso added that scientists who developed hybrid rice from the Philippines said PNG has the essential elements to grow rice on a large scale and go commercial.

Meanwhile, managing director of Small Village Gardening Philip G Davies also said that, with the second harvest on Tuesday, we can now prove to the people that variety of rice types can be grown in Papua New Guinea.

"We have the machineries and you have the land, so we can do a good farming when we use the capitals together for the production," Mr Davis said.

"One of the biggest things we wanted to get across to the people of PNG is food security.

"We must learn to cater for our future and one of the best ways is to do rice farming as a source to protect our future," he said.

It takes 120 days (four months) to grow and harvest rice.

And the next harvest for SL 18 will be in mid June. Farmers predictably believe that it will also be a harvest to remember.

Papua New Guinea has opened the latest part of significant national infrastructure with the formal opening of the "Kumul Flyover" in Port Moresby today.

In opening the flyover, the Prime Minister, Hon. Peter O'Neill CMG MP, congratulated all who had contributed to the project, and sent a message to those who are stuck in the past to embrace modern Papua New Guinea.

"This significant infrastructure project that has been delivered on budget and on time," PM O'Neill said. "As the government opens this flyover, we are delivering infrastructure in many other parts of the country. We are spending record amounts of money to build infrastructure right across that country.

"This includes Lae – that was once the pothole capital of the world. We have built concrete roads and Lae is becoming the concrete capital with strong roads that will last for decades."

The Prime Minister said investment in infrastructure, education and Health are changing the lives of communities and people throughout the country.

"Today we are here to say we on a new path for Papua New Guinea that will see Papua New Guinea taking its place not only in the region and in the Pacific but within the global community.

"This flyover infrastructure is part of ongoing progress.

"We are very proud to be here today, joining our Governor, our Ministers, our Hawkins Group partners and all the sub-contractors and the workers who built this.

"There were many critics, who continue to refused to believe that Papua New Guinea is changing. Even when they see infrastructure all around the country, more employment and large project, these people choose to criticise.

PNG lifts Travel Ban on Australians Visiting Bougainville

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Rimbink Pato LLB CMG MP, has announced the removal of the travel ban on Australian citizens visiting the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea.

Following a meeting the Minister held recently in Japan with Prime Minister, Hon. Peter O'Neill CMG MP, and Australian Foreign Minister, Hon. Julie Bishop MP, Minister Pato said both countries had reached common ground on issues relating to the ban.

"Prime Minister O'Neill reaffirmed Papua New Guinea's position that the Government does not approve of the establishment of an Australian diplomatic mission on Bougainville," Foreign Minister Pato said.

"While the manner in which the proposal was announced was unfortunate, we have discussed the issue with our Australian colleagues.

"We recognise that there was a serious lapse in communication and we can now move on from this issue.

"While Papua New Guinea appreciates the support of Australia and other development partners in Bougainville, caution is required.

"There are historical sensitivities in relation to Australia's involvement in Bougainville that must be taken into consideration.

"The success of the peace process on Bougainville remains a high priority for the Government, as I know it is for Australia.

"Travel restrictions on Australians travelling to Bougainville have been lifted as of today."

The Minister said he hoped there would be greater coordination in the delivery of development support in Bougainville to ensure greater clarity and better synchronisation.

The Australian Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop in a letter to Prime Minister O'Neill reiterated that Australia regrets their "miscommunication regarding the proposal for an expanded presence in Bougainville, and for the way the announcement has been reported and portrayed. Australia fully respects Papua New Guinea's sovereignty, including over the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, and recognises the sensitivity with which this important issue must be treated."

Minister Bishop's statement follows a letter from Minister Pato to his Australian counterpart last week on the matter.

The Games Organising Committee is pleased that corporate PNG has joined with
the Government in significantly supporting the 2015 Pacific Games.
As with all corporate sponsors the GOC works closely with their marketing departments to
ensure that they gain maximum exposure for their contribution to the success of the Games.
In some instances this involves the temporary naming of venues for the two weeks of the
Games period.
This is the case with PNG Power Dome (Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium),
BSP Arena (Taurama Aquatic Centre) and BSP Stadium (Sir John Guise Outdoor Stadium).
GOC CEO, Peter Stewart, said “The temporary naming of these stadia during the Games
period, gives due recognition for the wonderful support that BSP Bank and PNG Power are
providing to the success of the Games.
Without the support of these two companies together with the other 20 Games sponsors, we could not provide the level of service and facilities that the athletes of the Pacific deserve to compete at their best.”
Post Games, the stadia will revert to their traditional names and will continue to serve the
community for many years to come.
The GOC takes this opportunity to also thank the other Games sponsors, Oil Search, Ok Tedi, Telikom, SP Brewery, Puma Energy, JDA Applus Velosi, Brian Bell Homecentres, Air Niugini, EMTEK, Daltron, Petromin, MRDC, Steamships,
Coca Cola, Fuji Xerox Business Centre, Hertz, Moore Printing, PMMI, PNG Ports and National Gaming Control Board.
